Why soooo smoky?
« on: 14 June 2011, 23:43:48 »

Ok,

so i know diesels smoke....fact

I also know that chipped diesels will smoke.....

BUT, i think my smoke is excessive.
What would cause excessive BLACK smoke in general?

I notice in particular that the turbo on mine seems to "stall" if i lift my foot off the throttle at all.
For instance, if i'm cruising at 70mph and i let off the throttle a little for whatever reason (slowing down for instance, or even just as a change of pace), When i go to put my foot back, there is a pause (turbo lag i suppose), and then a big puff of black smoke that lasts till the turbo kicks back in and then woosh.

So, i like to say i'm just being paranoid, but my missus said she was choking on my diesel smoke when she followed me today lol. And if i'm honest, i feel sorry for anyone that follows me at the moment. It's literally every throttle movement after a deceleration or a maintenance of speed, results in what i would say is excessive smoke.

So am i being paranoid, or are there some things you recommend i should check.
(i am aware boost leaks and such may cause smoking, but as far as i can tell, it's not leaking and pulls well once it's on the turbo)

thanks in advance.

Which chip have you fitted. This would be your first thing to look at.
Other than that is the air filter clean. :y

loads of things can contribute to this, mine does it but a good long run at high speed ussually clears it out, when i say long run I mean at least 50 miles of 80 and above, mine then dont smoke for at least a couple of weeks,
however oil an filter can make a difference as said above airfilter, but sounds like you have a slightly sticky wastegate or something, possibly a boost leak, and until the turbo can pressurise the system it will be running too much fuel, also fuel type can make a difference, try all different brands, but supermarket fuel is usually the worst for smoke, my money is on a boost leak somewhere though :y

Is the full fat 160bhp ish chip.
Has a new air filter, and was oil and filter serviced about 1500miles ago.
Including new Fuel filter full of diesel magic.

I thought about it being cheap  :( (if that's possible) fuel, as i use tesco because of the points.
As far as i can fathom, it shouldnt be any different, as Tesco buy their fuel from big refinery names.
It might be a case that bigger names add different additives? who knows.
I have yet to try a different brand recently, but i will for the next tank and report back.

That still doesnt solve the turbo "stall" i feel when driving.
I have driven a few turbo diesels, and this is the first one that feel like it almost pulls back before pushing forward....it's an odd sensation.....

I thought boost leak, and did identify one, but it seems not to have helped.
Is there somewhere i can plumb in a temporary boost gauge with a t-piece? as i have one of those hanging about somewhere.

Would be interesting to see what it's hitting (which will also help when i come to do the adjustments to the wastegate at somepoint soon.,

With regards to a sticking wastegate....should i spray some maintenance spray on it or something?

And lastly, where are the common boost leak hot spots if anyone knows?

thanks

lol common boost leaks? well all rubber hoses from turbo can get soft and leak, the intercooler is known to spring a leak, inlet manifold gaskets can leech away the boost as well as the joints on the throttle body, however, first off think i would look at wastegate, under car and work it by hand whilst lubricating  it usually sorts that, other thought i had was how about the egr sticking? that would give you similar symptoms to what you have? i.e slow pedal reaction on turbo? if this is stuck or sticky(common) it will feel weird? check there first i think!! its easier, could just blank it off totally to try it!!

My old tractor used to smoke a bit after a few tanks of Asda's finest.  A tank or 2 of decent stuff used to calm it done for a while.

I always BP'd it for the MOT smoke test ::)

I thought a bit of smoke was par for the course with a tuned tractor?
