While cleaning my crankcase breather system yesterday I noticed that a pipe connecting to the back of the breather box on the plenum, the one second from the left as you look from the front of the engine, is badly split at the end. I have made a temp repair with gaffer tape until I can get a replacement.

What effect would this split have on the operation of the car assuming that a proper seal is not being made?

Well, the ECU is expecting all the fresh air entering the engine to be quantified by the MAF on its way in.

If there is another way for air to get in, the ECU won't know about this extra air, so fuel/air ratios are unlikely to be maintained as accurately as intended.

Absolutely. As said the  ONLY air entering the engine should come in through the Maf.

There are other causes, such as a dodgy or worn idle control valve, but sealing that pipe is an obvious one. Can't cut the split section off and re fit presumably?

All the above plus a filthy engine bay as the oil mist settles on every surface and attracts muck like a magnet!
