2.2 owners....
« on: 04 February 2008, 21:41:17 »

....what is your fuel consumption like??  Would it be strange to be getting approx 28mpg on a motorway run, when driven conservatively (ie 60mph on pretty flat roads)??

OK, the second part comes from the name of my favourite guitarist (I am a guitarist BTW), Richie Sambora, abbreviated slightly.  The first part is probably safer not to ask about;)  Lets just say it can get a little 'steamy' and whatnot when using the title :)

in my 2.2 manual with my previous commute of 80 miles in total around the m25 i would average 32 ish mpg.

However now with my 9 mile dailey commute, has made my mpg plummet, its now around 26mpg.

Partly due to the fact the engine takes a while to get hot, 30% of my journey time, the car is not up to temp....

Also i tend to rag it both ways, and there are lots of round abouts!

My old 2.5 auto Elite did around 19mpg on the same journey.

Hmm, I too drive the M25, junctions 1-28 anti clockwise, about a 45mile round trip.  I gotta say that normally my run is quite clear on the way in, and generally on the way home too.  Perhaps the difference could be that mine is an auto.  I know they consume a little more juice.

That sounds similar to my experience so far.

I have had my 2.2 auto estate  for just over 2 months now and I have not managed to get above 28 mpg, even on the motorway!

It is nowhere near the 35mpg I could easily get on my old 2.0 auto estate on the same routes.  Mind you it did not have aircon so perhaps that may account for a 1-2mpg difference.

I have suspected overfuelling as it does feel to be pulsing at steady speed cruising as if running slightly on choke.

I'm going to try a dose of Cataclean which I bought cheap on fleabay recently, if this doesn't make any improvement I'll have to try checking the CTS and lambda sensor readings to see if they are not slipping out of range.

Having said all that comparing the fuel consumption figures quoted in the original handbooks for each car the urban value for the 2.0 is 23.9mpg and the 2.2 is 18.9mpg - a big difference!  All the extra anti emission stuff appears to be spoiling the fuel efficiency even accounting for the slight extra capacity.

My dad has a 2.2 Auto CD, i jumped in it the other day, his average is 31.5 mpg ish...

He commutes up to Birmingham Aiport, once a week.

Make sure the breathers are clear!

I have been changing the oil in my 2.2, almost every 1k for the last 7k.

Its smoooth as silk now compared to when i first got it  :)

I get about 32mpg on motorway runs (80mph). On my daily commute of 3 miles each way i get about 18-19 mpg.

Motorway 31 mpg at 75 mph.

Town, stop starts 26-28 mpg

Clean breathers and new plugs may help, and check your tyres are at 30/31 psi - but try alternative fuel suppliers too.

Texaco, Shell, BP,Esso then Asda ..... in that order can affect mpg by 10% or more in my experience. Texaco being the best.  I also find BP hesitates when cold - meaning more fuel as I tend to be more agressive when pulling away.

To/From the centre of Leeds, rush hour, M62  :-X :-X :-X I get 23mpg, driven at 56mph, but most of this is stuck in traffic, or on A roads at 40mph. On a drive down to Leicester, I can get near 40mpg (at 56mph ish)
