Unstoppable window wipers
« on: 17 April 2008, 12:40:22 »

When i brought my 'W-plate Omega, the wiper relay was missing and the fuse removed as to stop the wipers, when the wiper fuse is connected the wiper continously run on the 2nd notch.

I've tried relays from both a '97 Calibra and a '00 Vectra and neither fixed it. Today I picked up a wiper relay from a '97/'98 Omega from a scrap yard but like the Calibra and Vectra relatys, it doesn't fit "snug" into the hole. Did Vauxhall change the relay or is something more seriously wrong?

Thanks

The likely candidate for this problem, IMHO, is the set of contacts that "park" the wipers when they are switched off. They are probably in the wiper motor housing.

Kevin

you think the contacts have just been moved out of position then rather than snapped off

why do you think the new relays would fit snuggly into the position, it's confusing me that...

Sorry. I wasn't very clear. Rather than the relay itself, there's a pair of contacts in the wiper motor that cause it to "run on" when the stalk is moved to the off position, until the wipers are at their normal "parked" position. If these contacts failed in the closed position, the wipers would never stop. Just something else to check really.

Have you tried changing the wiper stalk?? If this was faulty then it may simply be telling the car its in wiper 2 position all the time??

i've not changed anything, cause i still haven't got a relay in the slot, as mentioned above, the calibra / vectra / or pre-facelift relay will not fit into the relay board snuggly...

Are you saying it's running at speed 2 (maximum?). In that case, it's probably the stalk. Looking at the wiring diagram the parking switch and the intermittent timer relay only activate the motor at speed 1.

it's not going a 'rally' speed, it's just moving continously. as i say when i brought it there was no relay in the slot and i cant find one that fits.

i have to remove the fuse to stop them moving...

So, they're running without the relay or the fuse?
Hmm. Need to have another look at the wiring diagram.

It does sound like the park switch in the motor at fault.

If you measure the voltage on Pin 5 (31B) of the relay base then I bet you will see 12Vish

Right....so with fuse fitted, no matter what the position of the wiper stalk, the wipers run on the satndard speed ?
