Anybody got a ELM OBD near hartlepool ?
« on: 04 August 2008, 11:49:34 »

Hi,
Got an ELM 327 from fleebay and having trouble with it (supprise supprise), anybody round Hartlepool got one I could try ?

USB TX / RX ok
OBD TX ok but no RX light so all readings come out as 0

Tried Digimoto Lite and ScanTool on two laptops but the same for all.

Cheers

Are the OBD pin outs on the Omega "standard" ?
I think I have seen a thread saying that some early models had non standard pin outs, is this correct ?

An ELM327 will only talk to more recent Omegas supporting the OBDII protocols (2.2, 2.6 and 3.2 engines, i believe) :-/.

What would work on a old type ECU then ? (except for an expensive Tech2)
I tried the paper clip trick and it seamed to work but the flashing order did not follow the repeat 3 times loop. Would it be different for a fac fitted LPG ? (deulfuel) and how long does \how many codes are stored  ?
will disconnecting the battery wipe out the old codes so I can get a fresh reading with the paperclip ?

I think you need a so-called "Cheapo Tech 2". This is a code reader that doesn't have the ELM chip in, and more or less directly connects the diagnostic interface to a serial port on a PC This makes it a bit temperamental, and it needs a machine with a real serila port. Have a look for devices marketed as "Opel Tech-2".

.. and disconencting the battery won't help, I'm afraid. The ECU stores codes in non-volatile memory.

So does that mean that the Omega is not OBD2 compliant or that the ECU does not like ELM chip set in perticular ?
Getting more cunfused by the second !!

Older omegas (2.0/2.5/3.0 petrol models) were not OBDII compliant, I believe, so no generic OBDII code reader will work with them unless it also implements the non-OBDII protocols that were used on those models.

As mentioned by Kevin, its based on engines.

2.0 is not OBD2

Opel- Scanner will but is over  £300.00 now  cos it supports the new CAN interface as well. Covers most VX models up 2008 from 87
and the £ has dropped against the €  :-/
