Central locking fault

my 2003 2.2 sport has an annying habit of the drivers door refusing to lock or unlock but not all the time, sometimes the central locking will be fine for a few day's sometimes i'll need to unlock or lock with the key then a couple of days later it'll be fine again. any idea's
