Sorry if I missed it somewhere else on the forum, but I can't seem to find any reference to the size of the front door speakers on the facelift models. I've seen a couple of places where the rear door speakers are mentioned as being 5.25" but nothing specific about the front ones. I want to replace my standard speakers at the front with aftermarkets. I have an aftermarket head unit and a sub in the back that I transfered from my old car but the front speakers just don't match up to the rest of the system. I need a better quality mid-range sound to balance it out. Also any recommendations would be welcome.

6.5 inch if  i remember right  
good mid range and a bit of bass too
tweeters go in the normal spot

6.5 is the size of the front speakers.
But I think you'll also need the adaptors to mount them.

Thanks for that. OK so I look for 6.5 inch speakers then. I may go for a component set and fit new tweeter and xover as well. years ago I used to have a Vauxhall Carlton. That had much better quality speakers than this miggy does??!! I wonder why they downgraded the standard installations? What are the door cards like to remove and re-fit?

Just a couple more questions: Will most 6.5 inch component sets (Mid and seperate tweeter) be ok just wired straight in, using my present aftermarket head unit? ...It's a sony 4x50w with Ipod connector. I also have an aftermarket rear amp driving a single sub in the back. Other question is: What is the max depth/coil dia speaker I can use in the doors without mods (drilling, spacers etc)? Any data, ideas/recommendations? Thanks.

As said, assuming a facelift, 165mm speakers will fit but you need a set of Corsa spacers (slanted ones) and need to space the speaker out an additional 5 or 6 mm (I cut out a ring of MDF). Space is VERY critical behind the speaker so speaker depth will be important. I also had to shave away a little material from the door card.

The crossover can be mounted in the space inside the arm rest. Just cut away a bit of the polystyrene filler.

All in all, a bit of a pain, and I'm not sure I'd have bothered if I'd known what I know now.

Thanks for that Kevin. Yes, its a facelift. Hmm. From what you say it sounds like there isn't a great deal of improvement in the sound quality? ...I also thought of just installing a pair of coaxial speakers and disconnecting the installed tweeters but I cant imagine the sound stage being improved very much by that either. ....Hmmm Maybe I'd be best just leaving it as it is?

if mounting depth is a problem just cut the magnet off the back of the speaker

nice snug fit after that

  OO yeah, great idea! ...Hmm; maybe I could get some with huge magnets, leave em on, and just cut a hole right through the door panel and have them sticking outside? ...Of course, I'd need to fit a rubber seal around the hole to keep the weather out! I wonder if Alpine do speakers with coil magnets in Nocturno Blue to match the paintwork?

Quality of the original speakers is not too good IMHO but worth the hassle of changing them? Depends how seriously you take it. IMHO.

A deeper magnet is OK if you don't ever need to wind the window down more than 1/2 way. You'd have to go some to reach the outer door panel.

if you do change them invest in some sound deadening eg dynamat it improves the sound and stops irritating vibrations

plus i would always try and run them of an amp if you can a head units output isnt enough to do them justice and 4x50 is a measurement of its peak power over a very short time you have more like half that running continuously and that's not even a rms measurement (Root means square)true power output measurement

the mid range will be lots better off an amp it is able to drive the mid/woofer properly

or you could use underseal put on with a brush  
it might sound crazy but 2 or 3 coats work great and alot cheaper too
