Left my car for 1 week without starting, tried to get in, nothing. Eventually opened the door with the key and there was just a very dim bit of light coming from the puddle light, no ignition light, battery completely flat.

 I fitted a brand new gm sealed battery 2 weeks ago :-/
It should last longer than that???
My parents leave their car (same as mine) for 4-5 weeks when they go to their house in spain. It always starts.

Think I should take this battery back to vauxhall rather than just charge it up.
What do you guys think??

did you charge it before fitting it as it might have been drained dependant on how long its been on the shelf, if not give it a 24hr cgarge and see how it goes

No i didn't like you say could of been on the shelf for months, maybe I should just give it a charge.

Either the battery was not fully charged as said ..or the battery is faulty ....  or you have something on that you shouldn't.

Take the battery off, charge it up for 48 hours .. then leave to stand for 4 days.. checking the voltage occasionaly. If it holds voltage it is probably OK and you need to find what is switched on.

You haven't said why you changed the battery 2 weeks ago ... which is why I suspect something is running ..... too much of a coincidence for me..

Check simple things like boot light, puddle lights, power sounder, radio first

i just changed the old battery cause it had 04 stamped on it & as I do a lot of miles for work thought this would be a good idea as i have had a major service, cam belt tensioners water pump done to make sure it is reliable as i only bought it a month or so ago.
I think the new battery was weak, will take it back get a new one and charge it up b4 i fit it to the car.

Sounds like it was weak when you bought it.
If it wasn't fully charged it should have been charged by now, by using the car. Or the maybe your alternator is at fault. Go get the battery checked

Check the battery is charging on the car, as well. Might be that you have an alternator fault which prompted battery replacement, but a full diagnosis was not done.

Thanks for the advice.
The battery condition indicator was green but was so flat it could not bring a 5w lamp on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wierd
Took it back to vauxhall who said it should be fine if the indicator is green, it goes black when it is knackered.
Got the multimeter out and showed him
He then gave me a new one which I checked was fully charged with my battery charger b4 fitting to the car.
(the alternator is ok)
