Hi

Following on from my previous thread, I'm looking at removing the tow bar and electrics. I removed the boot trim and I've find the following wiring

Now I'm not sure of the best course of action:

Should I just snip each wire by the scotch lock and tape up or should I remove each scotch lock and reconnect each original wire back together.

All advice greatly appreciated.

I personally would remove the entire scotch loks.

Are you selling your tow bar ?  I may be interested if you are.

I would remove all scotchlocks, resolder original wires back together, sleeving them with heatshrink and then tape up the outside of the loom to restore it back to how it should have been.

Thats also quite a nice picture of how not to do it - would you have any objections to me using that picture on my website ?  Obviously no reference to your good self !!

The Scotchblocks are IDC (insulation displacement connectors) and shouldn't have broken the original conductors. If you prise open the plastic clip you should be able to pull the metal comb out without breaking the cables.

My preference is for Hellerman sleeving or heat shrink sleeving but you can't slide the sleeve over a continuous cable (hence the need to cut and solder) 

Taping over the nicks in the insulation on each cable should be safe enough. I would be inlined to carefully wrap each wire with electricians tape then finish by neatly binding it all with electricians tape.

Plus am I right in thinking that the professional way of installing would of been to use the female black connector???

Unfortunately the Vauxhall plug costs an arm and a leg. I think most people solder into the existing wires ... I did.

Yes, I would have used the black connector, but maybe saved a few quid by using one of the far cheaper patterned ones instead of the genuine one.

Someone decided to hit the back of the car and have shattered the plastic connector so its safer to remove I think.

They are pretty cheap anyway. About £7 to £9 for a 12S
