radio noise.
« on: 11 March 2011, 16:56:44 »

You can call me old fasioned if you like but i like to listen to the am bands on my radio for the football coverage, but when i go to am all i get is loud noise which obliterates the program in the background.
Itdoes not appear to be alternator related as it does not increase with engine revs, BUT it does increase as the car starts to roll forward and stops as soon as ther car stops.
I guess this could be an earthing fault but need to throw it out there to gain some thoughts from oofers. when the ignition is switched off the reception is crystal clear and when the engine is running it is clear as well but as soon as the wheels move the noise returns. :(

There is no real "official" answer, but a combination of problems.

The noise generated by the electronics inside the car and of the panel vibration harmonics when on the move usually mask the poor quality AM signals to such an extent that most car stereos no longer have AM on them. Most of the Radio stations have now put there money into improving signal quality on FM and DAB which is why most of the stations have now gone from AM. If you are a Five live or Talk sport fanatic, then suggest to buy a bolt on DAB unit such as the PURE HIGHWAY, as you will spend months if not years trying to cure your reception issue, and it really isn`t worth the effort.

Can you recommend a product that will work in my car and does it require any dash alterations?
I was hoping you would be the one to reply, Dave. :y

No offence to all other posters of course.

I have a "Bible" here of various suppressors that could be used for noise.

The book is ten years old, 4 inches thick, well out of date and does not cover every one available.

There are over 50,000 suppression faults listed with remedies.

Which one do you think you want ?

Modern cars do not react well with the old fasioned way of adding suppressors, and most of the electronics now have them built in.

Have a search for PURE HIGHWAY - I know quite a few Oofers are using them with reasonable success

Thanks for that dave, had a look, looks impressive and a quality unit, so any oofers using this could they show pics of how they look in the car so to speak. Has any one mounted it somewhere other than the screen.
