Radiator - couple of questions
« on: 15 October 2011, 12:49:14 »

Went to fit my new radiator this morning. But as I started transferring all the bits, I discovered I had been sent the wrong one. (I am hoping that Car Cooling sort it out quick).

The one I was sent was clearly for a different model or year, because overall it's basically the same. Although it's going back, I am curious: it has a self-contained matrix within the driver's side casing with its own unions. What is this?

Looking in the main bottom coolant hose connection, this extra matrix is almost completely blocking the flow of coolant. There's not enough room to even get my little finger around it into the main vertical chamber. Is this right?

I could live with a superfluous matrix, and I could adapt for the lack of gearbox oil hose fixing point, but I couldn't live with the bottom hose cross section apparently reduced to about one postage stamp.

Any observations or info will be welcome.

Understood. Mine has a separate auto box oil rad sandwiched between the a/c rad and the coolant - later model, presumably.

Makes no difference... Leave the Oil cooler connections blanked off and fit it anyway ;) ;)

It's what I did and it's fine :y :y I did contact them and tell them it was not needed for a later model but :-X :-X

that sounds like correct rad for your car, a genuine one might be different, but most patterns have the augobox cooler in

Well I accept the comments and I respect the experience that is behind them, but I still feel the same as I did at the outset:
"I could live with a superfluous matrix, and I could adapt for the lack of gearbox oil hose fixing point, but I couldn't live with the bottom hose cross section apparently reduced to about one postage stamp.

As I don't have an OE rad with integrated gearbox oil cooler, I can't compare the flow space. But it sure doesn't look good.

The drawings on the Car Cooling website clearly show the two different types, so I'm holding out for the one I ordered & paid for.

If you paid for the one without the integrated cooler (as I think I did) then you've been sent the more expensive one ;)

Trust me... The flow will be fine ;) I know, because I have one fitted and (if anything) it is too efficient at the moment ;) ;)

It's entirely up to you but I fitted it about 6 weeks ago and even driven very hard( :-[) in hot conditions it hasn't even got hot enough for the fans to cut in without  being left idling for at least 10 mins after stopping :y :y
