Diesel purchase advice
« on: 17 December 2011, 13:48:13 »

Hi

Simple question - what are the merits over both versions of the Omega diesel engine please?

It seems that a purchase of a newer model means the only choice is the 2.2, but if I can find an earlier car in good nick then the BMW 2.5 engine is available.

I know nothing about either.

My current family wagon is a '99 Astra 2.0di estate.  I like this car so the Omega seemed a logical upgrade.

Economy is important to me more than performance as the car would be used to ferry my family around so I tend to drive steady.

Are these the better options for economy or should I consider one of the smaller petrol versions.  Estimated mileage will be well under 10k a year, probably around 7k.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Regards.

Stu.

I don't know much about the diesels, but LPG is a way to have your cake and eat it. My normal run is along the M62, boring stuff, and I get about 30mpg which is not great, however I am hopefully finishing my LPG conversion today which means my fuel will cost 67.9p/L. The fun of a V6 with a cost wise effective consumption of 60mpg !. You may find you don't get much better fuel consumption with the smaller petrol engines, my 2.2 does about 31mpg on the same route.

BMW lump is a straight 6, so its quite smooth for a diesel.  Oil changes every 3k max with these, if its a manual can be chipped back to full BMW spec. Standard Vx spec its de-tuned, to get most out of it, need to chip it back to BMW spec, but the original box AR25, its not strong enough, it needs an AR35 from a 3.0/3.2V6

2.2 Is a Vx lump, only a 4 pot, so not quite as smooth. Again, needs fairly short oil changes, fairly bullet proof, will go on for a long time as per BMW lump. Down side is no Auto 2.2 DTi's were made....

Well the 2.2DTi is virtually the same engine (it's a Y22DTH) but the Omega is a heavy car. That said I find the car is swift enough when on the move and acceleration is good if you are in the turbo rev range, however, they can be a bit sluggish off the line and while they will happily sit at 80 / 90 on the motorway they aren't comparable to a V6 with it's effortless power.

I use my DTi in the week (and the weekend now the roads are covered in salt) and am very happy with it, I see 550 - 600 miles a tank rather than the 300 of my 3.2!

In a diesel that's a godsend! You want to be able to choose the rev range (ie. when you want it on the turbo) not hope that the thing kicks down when your overtaking!

Thanks for the replies.

It sounds a 2.2 is the better option for me.  My 13 month old son wont really care about acceleration and the wife when passenger is the ultimate speed control device so no need for the extra power from the BMW engine.

Having said that superchips do offer a chip for the 2.2 and claim better economy.  Any members on here with a chipped 2.2?

Whats your opinion for the price of £430?

I have just spent too long naffing about doing a coilpack and leads on my v6...

My vote goes to the 2.5 td ;) cracking engine. I miss being able to leave a roundabout in 4th, and taking it all the way to cruising speed ;) it's just not the same in an auto...
