Hi everyone!

Thanks for the additional replies.

The ceramic hob on my cooker is good for checking if thing are flat. I will use that to check the covers.  ;)

Also, Re smokingomega’s post. I have had a similar suggestion from a mechanic, that I described the problem to.  He said it could be the timing belt has jumped a tooth (how and why I don’t know  ???).  I will go through the recognised electrical problems first, but I’ve got an open mind.

Just to finish this thread and let you know what transpired.

First, I changed the plug leads and plugs. The problem was the same but the new plugs shed light on the problem. Number one cylinder wasn’t firing.  Also my first attempt at curing the leak from the left-hand rocker cover failed (bugger!)   :-[

I obtained a replacement coil pack, installed that and had a second go at stopping the oil leak.  This was a much better day.  :)   The car runs fine now and the oil leak appears to have stopped for now (those rocker covers really are crap!).

I would say to anyone faced with a similar problem that the work is not that difficult, just time consuming and fiddly.  A good ¼” socket set with a pivoting adapter and various length extension bars made getting the coil pack off quite straightforward. Also definitely read the guides on this site they are very helpful.

Thanks again to everyone who replied to this thread.       :y
