Wi Fi free broadband questions
« on: 17 March 2008, 13:53:37 »

I am on dial up Internet in a rural area. It is actually provided by mobile phone technology and is painfully slow and not as cheap as some UK broadband deals!!

I was pleased to see a company advertising free broadband at up to 54Mbs with only an installation charge for an aerial of up to 399 euros.

It uses Wi Fi technology and I guess it is like big bWiFi hotspots provided by some form of repeater stations. The service provider appears to be the Junta de Andalucia (like a UK county Council) though I have yet to find anyone who knows anything about this intiative.

Some Q's that occur to me are why not just buy my own aerial and cable to make the connection, if the Junta de Andalucia wants to encourage the wider availability of rural internet why has no one heard about it! How can it be free when ADSL costs more here than in the UK? What limitations are theren on WiFi e.g. hosting your own website.

Any Wi Fi experts out there who might be able to confirm or allay my fears/suspicions? I won't post their website link here but can PM. it.

Thanks in anticipation

There 'aint such thing as a free lunch. At the end of the day, providing quality internet access costs money... So either quality is going to suffer as subscribers build, or it's going to become non-free.

Also, whilst I'm sure it uses wireless technology I'd be surprised if it used wireless LAN as such. It wouldn't be secure enough or have sufficient range, and, certainly in the UK, it would be illegal to use rooftop aerials due to the terms of the license exempt radio spectrum it uses.

Maybe they reckon to make it pay by selling antennae for 399 euros but at some point that will reach saturation and how will they fund the service?

Maybe worth a punt if it's your only option?

No harm in posting the website link I think, it will allow the experts to comment on the technical aspects.

I think a friend of mine has a similar system though in the malaga area and it seems to work well. Don't quote me on that though.

£399 euros, I expect it includes all the equipment and interface and because it's a small price to pay for not breaking your neck balanced on a ladder trying to install a system that you don't have any experience of.

Also if there's no monthly service charge that sounds like an excellent deal and much cheaper than the uk in the long run. I would double check that though.

The safest, easiest and fastest option is to host your website with someone else anyway.

There is another company that is a part of the Telefonica giant called Iberbanda that offer a similar "radio" based service. Their website is www.iberbanda.es We are unservicable unless we are prepared to have a twenty foot high mast on the roof!!
