Chewing gum
« on: 21 December 2011, 18:01:55 »

Was out and around our local town yesterday finishing off the Xmas shopping and was absolutley sickend by the amount of discarded chewing gum littering the streets .
Now this wasn't a few bits here and there it was a virtual carpet of the stuff all over but with even heavier deposits all around cigarette bins .
WTF is it with these cretins that just spit it out for all to have to walk over or skip around.
I was even talking to a Tesco Floor Manager at one point and after mentioning it he was telling me that it's a huge problem for them inside the store with gum being spat out on the aisles but worse they even roll it up and discard it by sticking it under shelves etc which sometimes attaches to packaging.
Dirty ' stards or what , eh ?
Is this an uniquely Irish " thing " or do you all suffer the same over in UK now......

Ach , maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old man now........... :(       Mmmmmm ?           :y

Id have to say the chewing gum is a problem in our town centre but its surpassed by graffiti, Closed down shops, Fag ends, Litter and an overall sense of discomfort as shopping doesnt feel like a safe event there.

We fortunately have a Sandhurst Pride team part of which is to mobilise people (blend of paid and volunteer) to clear the problems. They invested in a machine which removes the chewing gum some years ago and cannot recall this being an issue recently. Another group goes round on push bikes with trailers collecting the litter from public areas.

They also have grumpy old farts like me sending messages to the Council to get onto the litter. To be fair I got off my ass one Christmas Eve and got a neighbour or 2 to clear a load of litter at a local problem area and sent photos to Council to get their act together.

Must say things have improved but do not really know why.

The way alot of people dispose of chewing gum is totally disgusting, I occasionally chew gum but I keep the wrapper and use it to contain the used gum and then put it in the bin. It's time this country adopted Singapores attitude on chewing gum were dropping it is a serious offence with stiff punishments.  The cost of clearing up chewing gum in this country cost local authorities millions of pounds per year when we all can least afford it

P.S rant over!!

The most vile habit there is. Cannot bear to talk to people while they chew gum.

When I was a kid I used to pride myself in being able to blow monster sized bubbles I found a blend of bazooka Joe and Hubba Bubba was the best combination. When I was about ten I managed to blow a bubble well larger than a basket ball, my elder sister took great pleasure in popping it with her finger nail, the result was my face looked like the monster from the black lagoon it was stuck in my hair, ears and all over my neck. She didn't half cop it off my mum though when she saw the mess  :y

Ashford isn't awfully bad for chewing gum really, there are some place which are bad though. Although I chew gum pretty much all day everyday, however I always put it in the bin. It's not a difficult task.
