Exhaust studs snapped
« on: 08 February 2012, 13:32:29 »

Hi guy`s
It appears the Exhaust manifold is blowing at cylinder head, slight rattle on start up and disappears after approx 20 or so seconds?. Taken manifold off etc and 2 studs nearest to thermostat housing have broken flush with head  :'( any tips on removing them?...or is it a head off  job?

Cheers

well when you take off the mainfold you will probably snap a few more, if its 2.0 then easy to get them out with some easy outs, or some grips. if snaped inside still enough space to dill. if you take off the secondary air intake pipes an braket.

Cheers guy`s

Managed to mig weld some washers and nuts to the broken ends and remove. Was a bit fiddly but managed. Used Vauxhall dealer parts for gaskets studs etc, all quiet again. Cleaned all mating faces well before refitting. Blanked off egr too while i was at it....Runs a lot better now.

Did you check the manifold's mating face for flatness before refitting?

I got a spare 2nd-hand one just in case the crack in ours got worse (it didn't).  This other mani looked great, no cracks, almost uncorroded, but had/has a distinct bow to its mating face, in towards the head in the middle, out away from head at the ends.  About 2-3mm!

Can't help wondering if they all have this tendency, which causes them to either crack, or bust studs.

Not trying to worry you, just wondering.

Hi

Yes put a steel straight edge over the mating face..... looked flat to me so was puzzled myself why they tend to do this?.. ah well, i will see what happens in the coming months.
