Scrimpers?
« on: 14 February 2012, 06:55:14 »

Mrs AA was watching this program the other day, I pricked up my ears when a garage bloke was teaching a bunch of girls how to do general maintenance on their cars.

One was how to check the oil level.

He said, never check the oil level when the engine is hot, as oil expands????

Is this correct?

Never heard that one before.

yup thats right  :y    you have to give time 10mins or so to let the oil filter back down, and have the car on a flat surface  :y

I'm fully aware of that, the point he made was never check the oil when the engine is hot as oil expands.

ahhh now i see your point on the expansion  :-[

i was always lead to believe the density changes between 80F and 120F by approx 2%

so 6 pints of oil would be 6.12 pints between them temperatures

hardly noticable unless you have a slide rule as a dipstick  :y

The owners manuals for all my BMW's say check the dipstick when the engine is warm, never from cold. Why that is I'm not too sure?

Ditto for the MR2 - I presume they want 'some' oil still to be in the galleries, either that or they want the 'expanded' level. No clue why, but I always follow instructions.. ;D

So do I.. but only once the realisation sets in that ignoring them is leading me down a path to something expensive going wrong. ;D Then it's time to read the manual fish the manual out of the bin.

New Beemers dont even have dipsticks! I went to check the oil on my last one (a 58 320i) and couldn't find it, called thye dealer and was told that there wasn't one and that the car would prompt me to add a litre when it needed it!  :o

Both my 7 Series have a digital read out, but they also have a dipstick in the engine bay  :y. It looks nothing like a normal dipstick and it quite well camouflaged. The 5 series I haven't even had a proper play with yet. I know some of the later petrols like my E60 5 Series didn't have one though.
