Yep my ex plod 3.0 with a 3.9 lsd is just like that flys like hell upto 130 but then looses power upto 145 takes ages... thats why im fitting a 3.45 to give me better topend & lower rpm at 60 70 mph

a change to the rear axle (diff) ratio will affect the whole car. Sure, it'll make it accelerate better, but it affects third and top just the same. Higher revving,more fuel, etc.

To answer the original question, there is no way to alter the gearbox internal ratios. This would be a physical change to the gears, for which parts are not available.
