Volvo VVT pulley
« on: 22 February 2012, 22:59:19 »

Hi all I'm after some info on changing the vvt pulley on a 2004 v40 1.8.
As this place seems to know everything I thought I'd ask.
Has any one done one, if so is it fairly straight forward or am I likely to have problems (I'll be changing the timing belt and tensioners at the same time).

I'm confident with changing the belt and have access to the cam locking tools ect.  From the info I have so far its a case of fitting the vvt pulley loosely rotating it untill it reaches its stop and then until the timing marks line up, tighten the pulley bolt fully, fit the belt, apply tension to the vvt unit and tighten the sprocket bolts.  Is this right or have I been given the wrong info?

Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

....whatever you do, dont follow volvos instructions for the VVT pulleys on the camshafts lol! loads of volvos have come out of dealers after having timing belts changed with the VVT incorrectly set

from memory you rotate the pulley all the way anti clockwise with the cams locked at the other end, turn it back to the mark and fit the belt - i can double check if nobody else tells you the correct way

T5D5.org is very good, drop Tim Williams on there a pm lol

Thanks.  I was told clockwise but that is also what haynes says so that could be where they got it from.   If you could double check that would be great.
Thanks

if haynes says its rotate it clockwise then im almost certain its anti clockwise, it's just to reset the solenoid or something from memory, anyway i'll check for you tomorrow and post up in the evening!

Thanks.      I will be replacing the pully with a brand new one so I don't know if that makes any difference.

why are you replacing the pulley ? ???

It knocks/makes a noise.  And all info I've read points to the pulley.  If you unplug the solenoid the noise stops I thought it was the solenoid but apparently its not.
