Thanks to Kevin and mark I concluded the coil pack was probably ok as it would be unusual for all 3 coils to go down at the same time....so I followed chris's advice and went nuts with the wd40 and checked all the connections,put it back together and went for a thrash,smooth as when I got home.

I put the code reader on it and no codes so all good,

Still very slightly lumpy if you let it just tickover for a long time but its going in the right direction...

My feeling is it will get better and better the more I drive it as it has only done 300 miles in the last 3 years....... :y

Could well be a Lambda sensor is a bit tired after a rest like that. Maybe it's getting lazy with long periods of idling and that's upsetting the idle. A good Italian tune-up might well sort that. ;)

Done the cambelt kit yet ? Sounds like it may  well need doing.
