Can I sell a car without the logbook
« on: 05 March 2012, 20:26:26 »

Bought a car a couple of weeks ago, and it is likely to be sold on Saturday, the logbook has not yet arrived, can I sell it?

Now I would not buy a car without the logbook, but the person who is buying this from me knows me and the story behind why we are selling it on so quickly, and I have the bill of sale, so in this case, trust is not an issue :y

Log book doesn't say anything about the ownership anyway. I would probably buy from a mate in the circumstances you describe, but not from a.n.other. Why not speak to the buyer and see if he'd be happy?

I assume the car is taxed, so he won't need it immediately....

And tested 2 weeks ago, just before we took delivery..... ::) ::) ::) The buyer is someone from the office, just waiting for her husband to come home at the weekend to have a look at it...... :y

Corect.  V5 shows registered 'keeper' and not the owner.   :y

Thanks Guy's pretty much what I thought, just wondered if there was any other paperwork needed to let the dvla know, but as we do know each other well I do not foresee any problems, logbook is due any time now anyway.. :y

The other aspect to this, of course, is a slight risk, if the change of keeper is delayed, that the buyer could line himself up for parking charges, speeding tickets, etc. which will come to you as registered keeper.

You won't have a slip to send off to notify change of keeper immediately, so I would get something in writing signed by the buyer to say that he's become the keeper on the date of sale. I'd also write to the DVLA notifying them of the change of keeper. They might well ignore it but there should at least be a record if you have to fend off anything incorrectly attributed to you.

As pretty much said, New owner takes on car with the proviso that you have a Log Book arriving soon, dont just give the new owner log book, both sign and date (on the day you sold it). Other wise New Keeper applies for new V5 and forks out £25.00.

At the time of the sale or transfer, you will need a duly signed paper, signed by both, stating, Vehicle Make and Reg No. date and time of changes, Addresses, reason, ie, Sold / Receipt, Transfer of Ownership etc. that way your both protected from possible things going wrong in the future.

I tend to photocopy the log book before it gets sent to DVLA by the previous keeper, has come in handy several times !

there is an offence of not telling DVLA that you've sold it - just to beware, they'll come after you, rather than the new owner.
