About 300 iirc :-\ a Merc V8 gives better for that vintage... though if the engine and box are 'free to good home' then I'm sure someone has got a blown up four pot that can be upgraded... :y

Yep, double the cylinders, double the capacity, probably not far off double the weight, a shedload more fuel consumption and another 100 BHP over the Omega V6. But they do purr nicely.

The Merc. V12 is an animal, or at least the one on my mate's ebay bargain SL600 AMG was. :-*

I was amazed when the seller turned the key and it fired up instantaneously and in utter, utter silence. And that was with the bonnet open and us stood staring at the engine! :-* Makes my Elite sound like a bag of spanners.

On the only one I've driven (TWR tuned XJ-S 6.0 manual) the gearbox made much more noise than the engine, which is why it got returned to the dealer with a "thanks, but no thanks". Straight cut racing box my @rse!

You do need the rev counter to tell you when it's running. A lovely engine in that respect.

The only thing I could hear - and I'm not even kidding - was birdsong, driving through Wales. It was that quiet in the car.. plus I hadn't worked out how to use the stereo, and even when I did I found only the tape deck worked; and the only tapes in the car were Jimmy Nail, Crocodile Shoes and The Corrs, Walk on Water. I am now intimately familiar with the lyrics to Crocodile Shoes ;D

The automatic gearbox is amazing, though, I must say - it's much, much smoother than the Omega box. So much so that you can't tell when it's swapped cogs at all. Picks up well, too, no matter what gear it's in - but then it ought to, really!

That lump was first used in the V12 E-Type some forty years ago now (1971)

Only had a paltry 5.3 litres way back then. :y

Nothing wrong with old technology :) A set of downdraught Webers on the 6.0HE would be nice - though not in the Cobra ;) I have a 1968-cast 428 FE for that.

you should have said - I have front and rear axles sitting in the shed for one of those, you could have had them for nowt. Have LSD, too. Are you sure you need XJ40-type subframes ? - it'll come as no surprise to you to learn that I have the earlier type, too.

I bought a replacement front and rear subframe for my XJR, intending to convert to 4.08 LSD (only manual XJRs had LSD)

is the car fitted with LSD ? - you can tell by a sticker on the side of the diff rear cover, the colour of the sticker tells all. As it would happen, looked at mine today.

D'oh - although, I need the V5 as well to get an age related plate (rather than Q plate) :) Definitely XJ40 uprights, wishbones & rear end on the DeDion Dax - their IRS chassis uses the older Series gear, though.

It should have an LSD according to the Jag manual, the XJ12s (according to that) were fitted with 3.58:1 PL diffs - though I was rather hoping it'd have the 2.88:1 PL the earlier (Series) XJ12s had as that would have given me a really long 6th for cruising.

I haven't checked the actual diff yet, mind - I'll find out for sure when the car gets dismantled in a couple of weeks.

Yup, that's it :)

It was a tough call between that and the Crendon (http://www.crendonreplicas.com/) which arguably has a stiffer chassis with a nice IRS setup, but it doesn't fit me quite so well (being a .. large chap) and the Crendon is all about originality and making a replica as close as possible to the 'real thing' .. which wasn't what I was aiming for, really :)

Has that got the Dax camber compensation setup on it?
