A small result
« on: 10 March 2012, 18:33:10 »

Rang VM the other day to tell them I wasn't wearing the £4.25 price increase that was being introduced from the 1st April and that I was invoking my right to terminate our existing contract early without penalty.

Finally struck a deal to pay £5 per month extra on top of what we pay now (£60.14) if they gave us a Tivo box and there was no further price increase for 12 months.

Engineer has just been, swapped out the old V+ HD box for a 500GB Tivo, then told us we were entitled to keep the V+ HD box and have it relocated for free (VM CS said they were taking it back when the deal was struck).

So we now have a Tivo in the living room and a V+ HD in the bedroom, along with XL TV on both, XL phone, and 100 Mbit broadband for £65.14 per month with a promise of no price increase for at least 1 year.  :) :)

I have them too (not allowed Sky in my flat!) - Just other week they said they were doubling Internet for free. Pah!

Got a TiVo box at work, use it for the red button Sky Virgin stuff. It's ok, worth getting free, but would never pay their retail asking price!

That makes my deals with sky and bt seem pricey,but...I hate virgin media with a passion and would pay £2000 a month to anybody else if I thought virgin would go bust.

You can check when you are getting the speed increase >HERE<

By all accounts, those that have 50Mbit will go to 100Mbit, and then have a further 20Mbit added making 120Mbit in total.
Those already on 100Mbit (ie, us) will see a 20Mbit boost and also receive a slight reduction in the monthly bill to make up for not being able to actually double the speed.

Although VM charge £5 per month for the Tivo, I can live with that because if it ever goes wrong they sort it for free as it's classed as rented equipment.
When I rang VM to have a moan about the £4.25 price increase, it was because I could see no forthcoming perceptible improvement in the service we had to justify the price hike. VM's CS were quite happy to drop the £4.25 increase as soon as I said I was cancelling early, although they also said they couldn't guarantee that another price rise wouldn't happen later on down the line in (say) 6 months time.

Eventually we struck the deal that we would sign a new 12 month contract and accept a £5 price increase in exchange for a 500GB Tivo, as well as having written confirmation that there would be no price increase until April 2013 at least.
They obviously now have my ass in a sling for 12 months starting from yesterday, but I think that's reasonable considering what we are getting for the money (even more so since it transpired we had the right to keep the old V+ HD box and have it relocated for free).

I might do the same, just to get the free box. Moved in over 18 months ago, so can easily cancel. Its a bluff though, don't think the BT line in is ADSL2  :(

Oh & I'm going from 10Mbit to 20Mbit, while nice, I'm quite happy with the speeds I currently get.  :)

We were with VM back in the days when they were known as NTHell, and my thoughts on them were exactly the same as yours now....so much so that I paid BT £130 to install a line so we could move over to ADSL.

I'm not saying VM are the bees knees, but they have definitely improved over the years and now offer a reasonable service for the money IMHO.

You can check what is available using your postcode at http://www.samknows.com

I'd be very surprised if your exchange wasn't unbundled TBH.

I do like Branson, very impressive little empire he has.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, BT are responsible for the line all the way to the NTE5 in your property.

If you go to http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping you can get a rough estimation of what speeds you can expect.
It will only give you an estimate of what you can expect on standard ADSL, but that is easily translated to ADSL2 speeds once you have that figure.
