3.2 water pump / thermostat
« on: 05 March 2012, 20:55:30 »

After just 14,000 miles my no-name water pump has started to make nasty graunching noises so will need replacing this weekend.  I believe the Vauxhall prices are now very expensive, even with trade club, can anyone recommend the best alternative?

The coolant gauge is also running very cool (less than 80 on a long run last night) & I suspect the thermostat is stuck open so will also attempt to change this at the same time.  Can anybody recommend the best place to buy a replacement and the transfer pipe which I also believe may also need replacement at the same time?

I'd suggest that the 'best' place is Vauxhall, that way you're only likely to be doing the job once. So far your 'cheap' water pump has cost you twice (plus fitting if you didn't fit it  ;))

65.33 + vat which is a disgrace.

Hunt out a good skf, cintitech one or a brand from the factors.

As for stat, one of these is the same as a Vx one:

Do get a new bridge pipe from Vx for around a tenner which comes with the required O rings for the above

The pumps from buypartsby are excellent, and seem to be built to GM quality, visually. £27.

Stat - as per MDTM's link.

If you break yours and get really stuck for a transfer pipe, I have one here..

You shouldn't break it though, as long as you're careful and wiggle it out ;)

Am not far away if you get stuck :y

I have been down to BPB in Nottingham and picked up a new water pump manufactured by .................... Comline!  Looking at previous posts I don't think that this is going to be much better than the one that is already fitted.  Looks like I am going to be going to the main dealer for the real thing - or is this just going to be another far eastern clone?

Very odd, the ones I've had from BpB certainly haven't been comline that I remember.

I know Elite Pete has also had good results with BPB pumps, from memory... Pete? :) :y

Spent the afternoon getting the old themostat out and fitting the new one.  Not too many problems getting the old one separated from the transfer pipe however the new housing is far thinner and I needed new shorter bolts to secure it.  The fit into the transfer pipe also seemed very smooth so I am a bit worried this may leak.

I thought about using the original housing as it came away undamaged however the new themostat wouldn't attach.  The central shaft is sealed in the new thermostat with just a small locating pin to hold it in place where the old thermostat had the whole piston remain attached to the thermostat housing.
