Pesky Auto gearbox!
« on: 19 February 2014, 00:01:15 »

I've been thoroughly enjoying having miggy on the road apart from 1 annoying niggle that is very random!
When the car is cold she performs great and as expected ... when warmed up she is pretty much the same, Flawless  :y
But the issue I have is at the point between cold and warm, the gearbox will seem to change down to first ??? and the engine obviously increases revs and doesn't pick up so well ... Now if you immediately let what little peddle off that you are using (as it only happens if your cruising at around 20 - 30mph), The gearbox has a panic attack and changes up 2 gears and then puts the spanner light on  ???  then it's fine and if you stop somewhere and turn off the car, when you re-start the engine the spanner light goes out and it's perfect like it never happened  ???

My first thought was maybe it's the gear selector unit that costs around £300 to buy and commonly breaks down, But the gear position indicator lights aren't flashing randomly as I know that they do this.

My second thought is bad gearbox oil as the car has covered just over 116k now and was stood for about 2 months before I have put her back on the road (tax expired 31/12/13), Maybe this needs flushing/changing whatever ?

And third thought was that she has thrown the teddy out of the pram as it was nice and cosy in my garage and she didn't want to be used just yet, Problem will go away on it's own accord lol  :D

Any thoughts please on this unusual behaviour and have any of you suffered with the same thing?

Car currently returning an average of 20.8mpg completely round town driving and this is over 50 miles, I don't think that this figure is too bad as it's a 2.2 petrol and that figure is still climbing  :y

Sounds like the box is getting odd info to me. 2.2's are very fussy with cam sensors, and these in turn send the auto box mental. So its worth checking the engine ecu for a cam sensor fault code, and also the auto box ecu while your there.
Also that the connector plugs behind the battery are secure.

I don't think its ATF related as that's usually shift quality related, thumping or banging engaging gear etc, under normal changes, where as this is changing gear when it shouldn't.

Right still having annoying problems with this ... Ecu not logging a fault for it but the fault is now really very intermittent, the car can drive fine all day but as soon as you start doing short runs then turning the car off and re-starting it the problem occurs!
When this happens the revs will climb and the car seems to be "stuck" in the gear it's in ... If you take your foot off the gas and go to 3rd on the auto box and then back into D, It changes with a "thump" .... then it doesn't do it for ages and no longer lights up the service/spanner light and isn't logging any gearbox codes, had it all cleared and no gearbox faults present only coil pack and HGF related stuff
