Chains are only a problem if there not serviced well  :y

Not to hard or erxpensive to change.

I actualy find the 1.0's ok and nippier than you think!

But buying 2nd hand, how do you know how well it's been serviced? How good is a 'FVSH'  :-\ :-\

Check the cam box state (through the oil filler), and listen for chain rattle when idling and revved.

Yep, I cleaned the EGR valve and throttle body on one on Friday and then took it for a test drive and it was quite driveable......certainly driven worse!  ;D

The 1.1 Rover 25's - we always had one as a loan when mine was being serviced (as I had 3yrs free servicing) - seemed nippy enough...  ...around town, get it in the open, you realised how gutless it was ;D

Having a look around at cars suitable for No 1 daughter. Having been given an extended contract in her job, she's decided that a couple of hours each way commute on the bus isn't for her & has decided that Dad should help her find a suitable car .........  ??? Naturally, I've been looking at Coursers for her.  ;D ;D ;D
Choices between 3 pot, chain driven cam 1.0 or 4 pot, belt driven cam 1.2
Anyone with any opinions or experiences of either
? I can't see a couple of hundred cc's making too much difference to running costs or insurance .................. (not that I've looked at insurance yet  :-X)

The 3 pot have knowen problems with oil pressured tensioners going loosing the timing and causing 200-400£ repair bills as they are nit easy to retime part from that there cheap fuel effective and nothing on a mig but what about a nova 1.0 or 1.2 :D

recently went thru similar, ended up with a mk4 astra.....  1.6

same to insure as the 1.4 corsa, but a lot more metal around my offspring....

(not without it's own problems though)

As said chains can stretch and the tensioners let go but the replacement parts are about £60 and easy to fit, I bought/sold  a 1.0 last year which I thought was lovely and would have one if I had to. Phone rang off the hook with parents wanting to buy it for their kids due to being the cheapest insurance option!

Depends on your budget.
I got a 1.0 recently for the price of a months Omega fuel. :y

The £30 a year tax will only be on newer models, mine's £130.

Not the smoothest engine (hey . . 3 cyclinders), but good enough round town. Depends on the route from Bury to Oldham, but even OK on short motorway hops - no chance of getting done for speeding ;)

Happy Hunting.

It's a bit of a mix, a couple of short motorway sections & the usual slow crawl in town traffic. The lack of speed would be a bonus - she was a bit of a speed merchant in her Mum's 1600 Astra a few yeas ago ............... can't imagine where she's got that from!  ::) ::) ::)
