Front Bushes to Wishbones on Elite 2.5 Petrol
« on: 03 April 2012, 15:07:18 »

Hi Chaps.

The bushes on my Elite are now getting spongy and need replacement.

I just wanted some general advice.....I have had a look at some of the Maintenance guides on the subject which are very informative , but I do have a couple of questions.

First, If I just replace the bushes, is there an orientation that I need to observe and fit the new bushes in same orientation?

Will I need to get the tracking/geometry of the steering re-aligned if I

a) Fit new bushes in existing wishbones

b) Fit new replacement wishbones (with bushes pre-fitted)?

Also if I do fit new bushes to the existing wishbones, will I need a press to push them in or do they push in (as suggested on the Maintenance guide).  and I quote "you can now replace the bush with polyurethane as recommended on here as they just press in easily enough get the geometry set up and save a bit of money on tyre wear." As per Razzo's (Steve) nice photos... :)

I am very keen to do this myself, have tackled new cam belt successfully, new brake discs etc...and do all the other genral maintenance on her - have done for last 10 years of her life.

Finally, where should I purchase bushes/wishbones from?

Many thanks all.

Cheers,

Mel.

Hi Mel.

Personally, I buy a cheap set of new wishbones off Ebay, a set of poly bushes for the front and some genuine Vauxhall bushes for the rear. The front bushes are easily replaced, just cut the rubber bushes out and the poly ones just slide in. The rear bushes will need a press. Once done you will need a 4 wheel alignment

If fitting replacement original bushes, the fronts need to be fitted as the old ones in the correct orientation with at least a 10 ton press with sliding head for the fronts then fitted with bolts tightened wheels loaded at the correct ride hight.

If fitting polly bushes, you need to be sure the rearward bush is in good nic and that there is no stearing ball joint play. It's more than possible to then fit polly with wishbones still on the car, by cutting the old ones out with a hole cutter then jig saw or similar. Once removed its 5 mins to fit polly by hand and do the bolts up to spec. No orientation, wheels loaded nonsense required.

Thanks Chris.

Where is the best place to obtain the polly bushes?

Cheers.

Thanks Pete.

Now on order!

I will tackle this job probably on the May Bank Holiday. If there are any other guides (like the Cam belt replacement DVD - which is brilliant) please can you let me know!

Many thanks indeed.

Cheers,
