What a difference changing the steering idler makes!
« on: 06 April 2012, 13:12:18 »

Just had this done to the car. It was really, really twitchy so took it to have the tracking done. They set it bang on then took it for a drive. Brought it back, checked it again and it was miles out so just to make sure it wasn't the mechanic getting something wrong, the boss and me came and watched. He set it bang on, drove it and we were back to square one so up on the ramps she went again and after a lot of poking round they noticed the steering idler was knackered. Loads of play in it. Took it back a couple of days later and they fitted a new one and tracked it again.

WOW!

It's not felt this good since I got it. Still doesn't feel like a car with a steering rack but it feels so much more positive and sure footed now. Probably because the wheels aren't dancing around all over the place!

Might explain why I managed to get through a set of front tyres in 5000 miles too.  :o

Good news. :)

Re the "steering rack feel"... it can.  Choices in tyres and bushes with full geo set up will see it sorted.

In case your not aware, toe setting doesn't cover it, although its relevant to the rectified fault. This car needs full geometric set up, with steering and suspension sorted first, to get the best from it.

Satisfying to see improvements though isn't it. :y

The nearest place to here that has the Hunter system is the local Lexus garage so I might take a trip there and see if they will do it. Been looking at WIM but they're a hell of a long way away from me and it feels a bit cheeky ringing up and asking for their settings so I can use a closer garage!

Nigel Lang at Bolton isn't that far away though.  :y

Phoned Tony at WIM the other day and was happy to give me his settings......
