Can I use 5/30 and 10/40 together?
« on: 21 April 2012, 13:42:12 »

Hi peeps, as there are now three amigos and a transit in the family I need a lot of oil. I have spare bottles left over from 4 for 3 offer, of 5/30 and 10/40. Can I use half of each say, or varying proportions of each when changing oil on one vehicle? I can't see any reason why not, but just thought I'd make sure. Oh yeah because I don't wanna go and buy more oil just yet.

Thanks peeps

Whilst not ideal, I can't see it posing any problems though surely?

While this idea is not being ideal these oils will and do mix together ok so there is no real danger doing this. Using 50% each will give you more or less an oil which is 7,5W/35 viscosity  :y

In fact, in factories producing and canning oils they put through first the "premium" viscosity oils with highest standard additives, then the second best etc and in the end they flush the system which results chain oil for chain saws (naturallu they put some additives to make it sticky, but after pocess).

Totally agree with KCL, 50/50 gives you 7.5/35, they mix ok. Personally I would use one litre of 5/30 for every change.

Ok thanks everyone. That's a good idea about using 1 litre of 5/30  anyway.

Thanks peeps

No problem with mixing in any combination. Both 5w30 and 10w40 are fine, so anything in-between will be Ok too.

Agreed - lots of motor oils sold are in fact blends!

As I said, all of them are; no such thing as "virgin engine oil". And they ALL do mix with each other without any problems  :y
