Urgent DVLA help
« on: 15 May 2012, 12:01:19 »

Half way to look at a car, is there a number so you can confirm the registered keeper with the DVLA? Owner hasn't got the logbook due to a private plate change recently.

try the Police. If you word the request right, they'll help.

basically, they have all of the information, but aren't allowed to tell you. So you need to ask something like "I'm about to buy this car of Mr X, he says he's the owner, do I have anything to worry about ?"

"urgent DVLA" is an oxymoron !

HPI it, then if the deal goes tits up then do you not get your money back? (That is if the information is wrong that they hold)

Already done the HPI which all checked out fine. I've left it for today anyway, will go there tomorrow. Always HPI every car anyway, however don't want them arguing the toss that I checked out a car with a different registration number, (because it hasn't yet changed on the database because of the private plate transfer). It's in London, which I'm always dubious about buying from especially when it's a high end car for way below book value money  :y

An HPI check won't show if there is (for example) a "log book loan" in force, and I suspect there are quite a few other schemes in place that won't show on an HPI check that the vehicle in question is subject to seizure if monies aren't paid.

@ Del Boy,

If you do decide to buy the vehicle and the former keeper fails to send the amended registration document on to you, you will have to pay for a new V5 out of your own pocket bud (circa £20 last time I looked).

I can spot a ringer from a mile off Del, and London isn't that far from me.
If you are really that concerned then I am more than happy to make the 30 odd mile slap to make sure you ain't being f**ked over where ringers (the PC term these days is "cloned") motors are concerned.
