Update: after removing aux belt . . ran the engine for 1 minute . . . squeak gone

All pulleys seemed fine when turned by hand . so repacked tensioner with grease & replaced & tensioned belt.

Happy . . all quiet now

Thanks for all the input on this one guys . . . now seems sorted .

Will save the"egg cup full of brake fluid in the coolant" idea for another day

Glad you got it sorted Al - thought it was probably tensioner bearings as my PM
