Reminds me a little of the film Close encounters of the third kind. I believe it was an ocean going vessel that mysteriously turned up the film........but the cause was the same same. ALIENS.

He rigged a parachute as an awning and removed the aircraft's radio and batteries but then apparently walked off into the desert in search of help

How very poignant; when one begins to think about this, it puts the finding of such remains onto an entirely different level.

i wonder who says it was the wrong thing to walk? with riigging a awning
sounds like he had waited for a few days and no one turned up to rescue him
if he had run out of water[yes you might be able to get a small amount from the condensation on the metal] you getting weaker from heat,lack of food,water, you scared,no ones come
so you have 2 options
stay do nothing and die, or walk you might find help or you might die in the dessert
great choices.

Seen a few Heinkel 111's a Dornier 17 & a Spit on imaging sonar in the North Sea off the Tees & Wear Estuaries that appeared very well intact & preserved close to the Ekofisk Oil Pipeline, but that was 20+ years ago now

How in god's name has it never been discovered before now, especially if it's that close to a smuggling route?
