Hourly Rates at Dealers
« on: 10 April 2008, 08:34:43 »

A few years ago when I had my Carlton CDi I rang the Vauxhall Dealer's in Sheffield where my car was in for some insurance work after some had run into the back of me.

I was quoted for a new headlamp lens plus half an hours labour at the hourly rate of £22, I asked them to do the job.

Needles to say when I picked the car they hadnt done the job,

The service department promptly whipped the car away and 40 mins latter I was presented with a bill for the lens with a labour charge of £22.

Confronting them over the labour charge I was informed that body shop repairs were charged labour at £22 per hour where as the service department charged £44 per hour.  Anyways standing my ground I got the job done at body shop prices.

But it may be an interesting point for people on the forum wanting work doing, for example replacement len's or lock kits etc if they are not up to the job them selves to first try and get the job done via the bodyshop at upto what may be a 50% saving.

This was 10 years ago so if they charged £44 an hour for labour then I would hate to think what labour charged are now.

Just phoned a dealer in Sheffield regards Omega floor mats that I saw in "The mothership" pictures on annother thread.  They only do Vlour type ones now.

Any way as part of our conversion I asked about hourly rates..

They now charge £60 + Vat in Sheffield.

Gonna check the dealer prices later this month for Rotherham, Doncaster and Chesterfield later just out of intrigue.

i was quoted 85 an hour. job ended up taking twice as long as quoted for and i knocked em down an hour so end result was 45 an hour. a roundabout way of getting the same cost as you did 10 years ago but some kind of result nonetheless!  ;)

You gotta watch em.

It's like the insurance companies, sometimes you gotta ring round for the best price.

Sheffield again, 2 insurance offies with the same company name about a mile apart, one of them wanted to charge me £60 for completely the same deal, same options/cover and broker.
Just shows, it pays to shop arround.

i know of a centre that used to be a vx dealer and service shop but is now independent, so they advertise themselves as 'independent vx specialists', so you get the same service without the markup. it's a decent alternative.
