Oil Problem in Vectra . . Thoughts Please
« on: 11 April 2008, 16:16:07 »

Vectra 2.6 is sounding unwell...

Its a Y26SE same as 2.6omega and i have said for a while its noisy top end - ive also suspected that the camshafts are not getting a proper feed. Not really run it as i intended to investigate it further..

Had it running today and i was getting more concerned at its tractor esque engine note and just once or twice the oil warning light on the dash flickered  :( Its not on constant but i switched it off at first sign of it.

My thoughts are its obviously not getting enough oil top end and i intend draining the (new vx semi) oil tomorrow, remove and clean sump and replace filter.

Anyone have any other thoughts on what i should do and also any thoughts on the suitability of the vx semi synth in it. The car has recently recovered from oil cooler failuer and i have no idea what its been given oil wise in the past - wondering if the oil is too thin for its liking?

Note - this is not an oil thread  ;D

Should say theres no engine failure but i reckon running the car is going to see eventual il starvation.

No MID warnings re oil and oil on dipstick is clean and good level, no oil leaks of note.

I'd check that the oil pressure relief valve has not stuck open too.

It normally only takes a couple of PSI to extinguish an oil light so I reckon it has got low oil pressure. Might be worth double checking it with a gauge, but noisy liters plus oil light is pretty conclusive I reckon.

Compression check? what you thinking worst case Kevin?

That oil light flickered twice faintly and went off - never come back on but it was enough for me.

No, I meant an oil pressure gauge not a compression check but I think tappets plus light is telling you there is a problem anyway.

Oil light shouldn't come on when it's running unless the switch is fubar or there's a problem.

Also check for a crack in the pickup pipe or a poor seal between the pickup pipe and the engine that could be sucking air in.
