The aggressive response seems fueled from a pack mentality.

totally ott.

Must have been a sustained attack for the condition to be described as critical.

A single punch to the temple can easily put someone on the critical list.

As for the attack itself, all the story says so far is that the victim "gestured" for a vehicle to stop so he & his brood could cross the road.
It doesn't say what the gesture was, or whether that gesture was followed up with a bit of verbal.

I'm not saying that violence is OK, but if you walk up to a stranger and stick your fingers up to them or indicate with a hand gesture that they may have a penchant for playing with themselves then don't be surprised if they do smack you in the mouth.

How about ignoring gestures made whatever they are

Many people have died from a simple smack in the mouth caused by falling over and banging their head as they go down.

At the moment we have only heard half the story, for all we know the "victim" could well have been the aggressor and simply met his match on this occasion.
Until there is definitive proof one way or the other I find it best to take whatever the media say with a pinch of salt as they will write pretty much whatever it takes to get a sale.

I'm slightly curious as to why he was gesturing to the traffic to get it to stop anyway. Unless he's a lollipop man, or was on a pedestrian crossing/zebra crossing and a car didn't stop, what right does he actually have to do that? You need to be a tad mentally unstable to attempt to stop (apparently speeding) traffic for no other reason than you want to cross the road. It seems quite simple to wait for the big scary cars to pass and wait for a gap in the traffic.
