PAS pulley removal
« on: 10 July 2012, 23:17:39 »

I need to replace the PAS pump on a 2.5 V6. I have a spare PAS pump, can't remember what it came off, it looks the same but the pulley is a slightly different diameter. On the original the pulley is bolted on to a boss, on the spare the pulley is mounted directly onto the shaft. So, how do they come off? is the shaft threaded, and if so normal thread or left handed? Or, will the smaller pulley make no real difference??

In my opinion DON'T fit it. Afaik all the omega pas pumps have a bolt on pulley so the one you have is incorrect.  It may physically fit but if the pulley is smaller it will run faster.Does it have the same pressure as the correct pump at all speed? If not your asking for trouble as the output will affect the force/ amount of assistance and therefore could fail or blow a seal leaving you with no steering(well might as well be).

Get a correct pump from one of the breakers on here and save yourself the hassle/problems associated with fitting the wrong part.

Well the "wrong" pump is now fitted and after a decent run, including getting a few revs on in kickdown, no adverse effects. I think the pump was from a 2 litre Omega (but it could have been from a number of other Vauxhalls, can't remember) The pulley is less than 10mm smaller in diameter, the fore and aft spacing is the same, the original belt still fits, and by some rough mental arithmetic I reckon there is no more than 10% difference in speed, which on a system designed to operate from about 500-7000rpm I'm not too worried about.
