Rats...
« on: 21 July 2012, 15:31:37 »

Looks like the rats were quite at home under my mv6's bonnet :(

Ive hoovered up the evidence, and had it running... So far the only victims seem to be my HT lead now has a 1 inch section missing from being chewed on, which it's spectacularly arcing across and somehow still running on 6, and my rev counter isn't working (which I suspect is why the abs and tc lights are now on).

Anyway, what does the rpm signal come from for the counter, where do I even start looking for a wiring fault/missing section?

It's dark and grimey in there, and it smells!!

3.0 v6 before anyone asks lol

Cheers  :y

I haven't checked the wiring diagram but the rev counter would normally be driven by a signal from the ECU to the instrument cluster.

Might be worth reseating the cluster before you try anything else.

Do you have any other symptoms? When my alternator failed a few weeks ago one of the the things that stopped working, when the battery ran out of charge, was the tachometer.

Don't worry EMD, it's a very very clean rat, a good blasting with the pressure washer and some antibacterial floor cleaner, some petrol and a water spray can have ensured so  :y  ;D (couldn't find my engine degreaser lol)

I'd noticed it a week or two ago, so been moving the car, leaving the bonnet open, putting bait down, there was one I did see, cheeky bugger making a bolt for it behind the wiper mechanism, but he did have a gob full of poison when I first saw him (where's the air rifle when you need it!!) I'll check round that area for missing wiring, now it's clean I dare put my hand in there again! I dont think it's currently residenced but I did have to clear a lot of nest evidence from the airbox!! (n.b., don't cut the front out of your airbox!!)

Andy H, how do you reset the cluster?? Mfl if it makes a difference, and I'll check the voltage when I next start the car ;)

I guess it makes a perfect little water tight house thinking about it , couldnt have picked a better car to nest in before the poison dinner . Anyway hope you get it sorted and have not eaten any substantial wiring   :y

Andy H yes you did, funny how your eyes read what they think they see, not what's actually written!! D'oh!!

EMD, fingers crossed lol! Got to be said it looked like a perfectly ideal environment in there! Glad he didn't explore past the filter else I would have ha a right 'mare in them multi rams!!

Dbug, yes I will.. Not so much dead rats just lots of straw and bedding matter to pull out, though I seem to have cleared most if it  :y

I would put pictures up but I tried my photobucket app earlier and it just kept crashing  >:( so will have to venture onto a computer if it doesn't work later.. I know I've at least got a nice clean shiny "after" picture  :y

It had been sat for about three months, near to our hay barn; a few years ago a green waste recycling thing set up opposite us in the neighbouring farm and ever since then we've had to keep dealing with waves of these pesky rats.. They're there, you kill them, they've gone, then a few weeks later they start creeping in again!! Plenty of hiding places for them (including my cars!!) and they are obviously finding good food source, dispute our efforts to secure anything edible  :(

Great fun with the air rifle though  ;D :D
