windows 7 basic backup question
« on: 29 July 2012, 17:14:01 »

Netbook is 7 months old and is asking for the user to carry out a first time backup.

My lad is following the steps as asked.
The netbook starts to backup then throws a wobbly.
A screen appears stating that windows could not complete the backup because there is not enough space on the drive  :(

Anybody know how to change the drive it backs upto or what is wrong here.

He has only about 1 gig of personal infomation on it.
The rest is Packard Bell and Windows stuff.

The netbook has a 250 gig hardrive

Imo its a waste of time backing it up to its own hd. A network drive or a usb drive would be my preferred place to back it up to.

One of the first questions backup asks is 'where do you want to backup to' .

It lists all hard drives attached and there is a separate button for network drives.

how much stuff you got on drive vids/pic etc, use's alot of hard drive to make copy so say you have 40gb hard drive and have 18 gb used it will not be able to doit as it need's to use 2-8gb extra to copy and work with. also use's alot of read ram. al to put on disc's.

Couldn't agree more.  As said Win7 backup lists all potential backup devices attached, incl DVDRW etc.
Best bet is to connect up an external hard drive and use that for backups, or back up over a network.

Irrelevent as not sensible to back up to existing hard drive ???
Just ensure backup device has sufficient capacity to take backup - 40Gb  ;D ;D ;D - don't go for anything less than 500Gb as cheap enough now.  As most modern systems have more than adequate RAM, unlikely to be an issue (gone are the days of sub 1Gb RAM) :y
