DVT
« on: 30 June 2012, 22:04:15 »

Got a bit of a scare today, after my last long haul flight (thursday)I had a bit of a cramp type pain in me left calf, high up just below the back of the knee.

Now those that know me will know I keep meself fit, running, hill walking, mountain biking, swimming and such like so I never thought much of it until last night when it wasn't getting any better.

Uppermost in my mind has been DVT, one of our guys lost his foot last year to that and just recently the company had changed my flights back to spain from going via Dubia/Madrid (which meant 2, 7 hour flights with a good break in between to go walking about) to going KL to Frankfurt then back down to Madrid ( single 14 hour flight)

Decided to pop into the local hospital A & E (we don't have a GP here) and after blood and ultrasound tests they confirmed I had thrombosis in that leg, luckily it was not in a major vein only a minor one..... now on a course of 10 doses of heparin and ibuprofen 600's for 8 days having to wear a pressure bandage then go back in 10 days for confirmation the clot has broken up.

I'm not one for complaining or griping about ailments, in fact I hate going to hospital, even one's that understand what your saying! But just thinking what might have been, had I not thought about DVT and just thought I had pulled a muscle......

Just goes to show that even those fortunate enough to be healthy and fit cannot escape these things!

I know about DVT.....i managed to get it a few years ago in my left leg....I could hardly walk, it was that painful....I got it on a Sunday....Doc was annoyed with me that i waited until Monday before going to see him....told me i should have gone to A&E on the Sunday. Got sent straight to hospital....and got given wafarin injections for 10 days....then wafarin tablets for the next 6 months.

Ive ended up with surface thrombosis....apparently nothing can be done about that.

It was blamed on me driving an auto and sitting for hours, one of the reasons i went back to driving a manual.....i do a fair bit of walking too with Holly Dog ....

Get well soon  :y

Frigg!  That was a bit of a frightener Bootie - nice save all the same.  I hope you're well down the road to full recovery.

The message is clear all the same - if you think there's something wrong with your health, get professional advice about it sooner rather than later.

Wishing you a full recovery.

Was your Spanish hospital experience a good one? Did they give you a printout of their records showing what they had done, what they prescribed, chopped off etc?

You will have to get up and walk about on the plane in future. If you see one other fellow doing the same it is me. Just ignore the strange looks you get from (seated ) folk.

Ah, (coughs) sorry about the tardiness but....... Now back at work and fully recovered, downside is I have to inject a heparin substitute before every long haul flight, not a problem more of an embuggerance, still needs must and all that.
Back to running round the helideck in the sun just to get blood flowing properly.

Many thanks for all the kind words of support.
