'Tis indeed a mystery.  The garage assured me that it was a genuine part but I guess even they can become faulty - Unless it is a wire somewhere?

Can you try and disconect the MAF,and then start it?

Yup, a change in crankshaft sensor again sorted the problem.  This site is the best!  :y
