Hello all

Just realized that engine oil is leaking quite much to the floor. It seems to come from the joint of the engine and gear bos (2.6, V6 and AR-25). So, perhaps the crank sealing in back end is broken. Is this a common problem with V6. If yes is it possible to change the crank sealing by just takin the gear box away. Is there any "cover" which I could remove to check whether the oil is coming from the crank end of the engine. I saw yesterday four torx bolts in this joint area screwed upwards but did not understand what they are holding.

Are there any other common sources for this leakage. Perhaps the oil is coming somewhere else, it was difficult to see anything in the upper part of the engine. 170 000 km is behind. Never changed any sealings in this engine e.g. the cam cover sealings are original.

Please help me to avoid wrong diagnostic.

I've heard of a few rear crank seals fail, but it's not that common. There's a rubber bung in the bottom of the bellhousing. You could remove that and see if the oil is tracking down the back of the engine block or coming from the gearbox side.

Cam cover gaskets and the oil cooler pipework in the Vee of the engine are other possibilities.

Thanks Kevin

I check the rubber thing before I do anything else. The engine looks (quite) dry everywhere as well as the pipe work in the V. Let's see what I find.

Hello dbug

Thanks for comment, I do not believe it is autobox oil as I would have recognized the red ATF. This leakage is real Mobil Rally Formula. I know the colour, smell...

Hello

I took both rubber covers away - one below the bell housing and onother in front of it. The bellhousing is wet of engine oli in front of the bellhousing. Actually I cleaned the joint of the bellhousin and engine carefullu anf found that there is a small e.g. 10 wide groove between the engine and the bellhousing. That groove becomes wet (from inside) when engine is running after a couple of minutes. So, seems to be engine oil coming from the back of the engine.

1. Do you see any other possibilities than the crank seal ?
2. If I start to change the seal do you recommend me to remove the engine or remove the gear box.

Gearbox would be the easier of the 2 options to remove  :y but will be easier with access to a car lift and gearbox jack as that is a very heavy gearbox and will require some considerable muscle power. ;D

That is sounding very much like the crank seal. :'(

Drop autobox off (with torque convertor "attached" to box) - needs 2 ideally as weighs almost 100Kg.  You also need to remove cats for clearance. :y
