What tile cutter / trimmer
« on: 23 November 2012, 13:42:57 »

So I'm going to have a go a tilling for the first time  :o

I had someone in last time, they did an excellent job. (thanks for the recommendation Martian  :y)

However, there is an additional area that I want to do. Its quite small, so want to have a bash myself.

When I saw it being done, the guy used what looked almost like some sharp pliers to cut the tile to shape it around an object (eg the bottom of the sink)

Was thinking these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/tile-nippers/15507

I should be able to borrow the main tile cutter and other tools.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Unless you have had a fair amount of practice, you are likely to ruin all the tiles you try and nip.

If you just want to cut into a tile or two, then a tile saw is more likely to be for you.  it takes ages, but does't require any skill, so you wont break any tiles.

I have had a lot of success in trimming tiles simply using old-fashioned carpenters pincers ... bit like these but mine are donkeys years old .....

http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk/p16304/Stanley_Pincer_10in_2-84-185/product_info.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=allprods

Mark the line to be cut with a sharp scribe then use the pincers to work towards it taking VERY small pieces each time .. if you get greedy and take a large chunk .. the tile will break, but for small jobs around pipes, sockets etc , it works .. just needs patience .. :)

There's a jigsaw blade for tiles too http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dt2102-qz-tile-jigsaw-blade/97497?cm_mmc=Google-_-Keywordless%20Ads%20|%20Generic-_-HVK%20|%20Keywordless%20Ads%20|%20BMM-_-_cat:screwfix.com&gclid=CLD8lO2j5bMCFUfJtAodEFgAqw#  :y

Thanks chaps  :y

Actually the saw/blade option might be best, the area I have to "nip" around is the the window sill edge that sticks out a bit. Previous owner put in double glazing and had PVC sill put on top of the orginal 1930's ones to make them bigger. So need to take a small chunk out it.

I've got loooooads of tiles so can easily break a few when having a go, as I bought loads of them at £9 sq meter  :)

The Bosch PMF180 Multi Tool is what you want for that Mark, you can borrow mine if you like bud (I have every disc available).
