Exporting a car from UK
« on: 10 September 2012, 22:41:37 »

I don't have a UK registration Doc. at hand over here in ROI but can anyone tell me the sequence that has to be carried out by an owner when he sells a car to a new owner for permanent export ?
I want to make sure I know what has to be done so that I am certain I have the correct documents , which must be the complete doc for re- registration here . and what the seller has to do to ensure that no problems arise later.
I've bought a car in Belfast and will be driving it back to ROI about 55-60 miles to the border . I'm having a nightmare over the fact that the car will be MOT'd and insured but it was put on SORN on the 1st of September this year and thus untaxed.
I believe that SORN lapses when the registered keeper sells it and the new keeper ,me , has to reapply but as it will be being exported that isn't applicable and the problem is just an untaxed car. The problem is that I really don't want to be argueing the finer points of SORN with a big burly NI policeman on a wet night when he " hasn't had his dinner "
It looks like I'll have to get the current owner to tax it at my expense to drive it those miles but I also have been told that only UK residents can apply for a refund , if this so it's a bloody expensive 60 mile drive . >:(

The V5 says:

Quote
Only use this section if you are personally exporting this
vehicle permanently (for more than 12 months).
Do not fill in this section if you are taking your vehicle to Northern Ireland, as we do not regard this as an export. You must take the whole V5C with you.
If you are exporting the vehicle you must:
• give the date the vehicle is being exported
• sign and date the Declaration in section 11
• send this section to us at DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1 BD, and • keep sections 1 to 8 of this certificate (the registration
authorities of the country the vehicle is being exported to will need them).

And also:
Quote
If you are taking your vehicle out of the country for less than 12 months, or are selling privately to someone who does not have a Great Britain (GB) address see "Your Registration Certificate (V5C) and you" (INS160) for advice.
There is more information at www.direct.gov.uk/exportingyourvehicle

From NI to Eire is exporting out of the UK. Best bet, hire a recovery truck for the day and make sure that you've all the necessary docs with you :y

I'm not sure about this but I think if you get it towed then it doesn't matter if its SORN as you can say you are taking it to get repaired. I'd be happy to tow it to the border for you some evening if its any help?

If the wheels are on the ground, then technically the car must be fully road legal. ;)

Oh Lordy , Lordy Hallelujah..........................problem solved. :)

All may be revealed in time  but I have to say a BIG THANKS to our fellow OOFer horsecow who kindly offered  to go out of his way to trailer my car down to the border between NI and ROI.
I thank you Sir for that very generous gesture .  :y
