Auto Box Breather Pipe
« on: 12 September 2012, 13:39:02 »

Is it possible to replace the autobox breather pipe just access below and routing the pipe back up into the engine bay.

After investigating an exhaust issue today I found that the breather pipe has fallen down possible from some earlier work and has managed to melt its self to the downpipe and it only leaves a remaing piece of pipe around 200mm long.I have pushed this back up behind the engine but am doudtfull it will remain in place for long so will need a new peice ..curious if access from below is ok without moving gearbox etc.

Anybody with a autobox breather for sale also ?? :y

Easier to remove from gearbox end if box is dropped a tad.  If you still have 200mm length attached I would either tiewrap it up at top end, or extend it by joining another length of pipe to original.  Just be sure to place/tie it so water can't get down it into box ;)

extending the pipe is your best option as getting to the top of the gearbox is near on impossible. i could just feel mine with fingers but couldnt get to change it.

i actually extended mine when i changed my gearbox.and extended the pipe so that it comes into my engine bay and now ends near the coolant reserviour. this is so i can see it when i do my weekly checks and also should any atf ever come out the pipe ill see it instantly  :y

to extend the pipe you already have i would recomend a small peace of solid (metal) pipe slid into the end and then tywraped in then slide the new peace of pipe on to the other end of the insert and ty wrap it on. this has worked preveiously for us on a landerover auto box coolant line so sould be sufficent enough for a breather and saves you the hastle of dropping the box slightly  :y

Thanks guys...makes perfect sense and I was doudtfull about getting the old pipe off and replaceing without major disruption to gearbox mountings.

Plan will therefore be to obtain a plastic tube sleeve the internal width of the peice of existing pipe I have visable and then join another peice to it and feed that up the center of the engine and cable tye around by the coolant bottle. Will check ebay for a suitable pipe joiner.

What I will need is a peice of pipework to  allow me to join to so will post a wanted .

I can't promise anything but I'll have a route in my pipe box at the weekend for you to see if I have anything suitable.

We used a bit of the solid pipe of the old gearbox I'll take a pic for you at the next opportunity x
