I'm glad you & Jester are ok. We can all say what you should & shouldn't do, but at the spare of the moment we do what seems right, wrong or not.

glad you and Jester are safe, coastal currents can be unexepected and strong. Is there such a thing as a boyancy aid for a dog ?

Perhaps it might be a good idea to walk the dogs in the local park. Not as nice, but a whole heap safer.... Glad you're both ok.  :-*
