mp3 input / using the tapedeck
« on: 19 September 2012, 00:46:24 »

If like me you find 6 CDs not enough and are prepared to sacrifice quality for having thousands of songs available, get a "USB 2.0 Tape Cassette Adapter MP3 SD/MMC Card Reader" - type 400305527419 into eBay. It's basically a casette shell containing an MP3 player.  It plays through the tape head so quality is not as good as a CD but better than a tape.  You need to add an SSD card.   You can't go wrong at £6.80 delivered from China. Includes a remote control.  Also available in ripoff britain if you want to pay £16 and not get the remote.

I previously tried a cheap 99p jack plug to casette head adapter that plugs into your own MP3, the quality was abysmal.

Quick word of caution !!

Be carefull using any cassette adaptors with external wires on an electronically loading cassette deck - it will often jam and lead to an expensive repair.

Usually fine on decks with manual eject buttons though.

However, good shout - not seen that product before and will order one in for some testing.

one advantage of this one is no wires. However it does have the remote control sensor in the casette whichneeds to be visible to the remote.  On my tape deck the cover flap doesn't close over the casette unless you tap it so it doesn't obscure the sensor, otherwise I would have to drill a small hole in it.  I did open up the casette and make a hole next to the remote sensor to improve reception but I'm not sure it is necessary.  You will also find cleaning the car tape head, wiping the casette head with olive oil and nudging the casette about when in position will improve quality.  As I said its not as good as a CD, but its not bad.  I keep Dolby switched on, which I thought would not be needed but seems to be.  The cassette has graphic equalizer settings which make a big difference, I haven't worked out how many yet, I just loop through them.

I`ve just ordered one of these as my works van has a tape player but no cd and I hate the radio, as I want to play mp3`s in my MV6 this is far cheaper than an aftermarket upgrade as long as the sound quality is ok.
