When you drain the oil from a hot engine via the sumplug you will also drain much of the sediment & crud which sits in the bottom of the sump and blocks the oil strainer eventually.Pumping it out of the dipstick hole leaves that stuff undisturbed where it is imo.
I would rather remove the sump and give it a good clean while it was off than use a siphon pump personally.

I fully agree with this view - but presented with a V6 drain plug that refused to be removed I used the pump to drain the sump - which was then sorted after it was removed. I didn't fancy taking it off when full of oil. Used a similar technique to drain ATF from an automatic gearbox.  :y

The state of the sump was truly terrible with tar like sediment. Needless to say that it was all cleaned out.

An intelligent approach imo Robert.I just dont like them to be used (as is the case in many garages) to change the oil on a regular basis. :y

Smarts don't have a sump plug by design so oil has to be removed via the dip-stick tube. I've removed the sump from SWMBO's car after using my Pela vacuum pump & there was sod all left in there.  :y :y
