Let there be light - or not
« on: 14 December 2012, 16:35:47 »

Many discussions have been had about annoys people on the roads, and I have to say that after a good number of years driving I just accept there are a lot of bad drivers. I don't particulary want to start yet another thread about driving standards, but have to say that the use of lights, or lack of, is a little concerning.

At 15:30 on a winter afternoon with grey skies, there are still people with no lights on. There are people who are driving with front fog lights on, which frankly I don't care whether they do or don't.
Personally I would like to see day running lights obligatory like in Scandinavian countries.

But the one thing that does get my goat, it the use of rear fog lights, when at 16:00 on said winter afternoon the heavens open - spray on motorway, heavy rain. Why cannot people realise they are called fog lights for a reason. Furthermore, whilst these glaring lights are offending my eyes, and cars zoom down the motorway at 70-80mph, the drivers do not appear to see the link between their speed and their lights. If visibility is that bad you need fog lights, you should not be doing that speed. If it is ok to do that speed, then you don't need fog lights. Do people not know that you should only use them when visibility gets very very poor - 50m or less maybe.

So I have an idea. With all the technology available, I think cars should have an automatic speed limiter fitted which gets activated by the use of rear fog lights. Whilst the lights are on, speed should be restriced to, say, 50mph. So, perhaps people would be less willing to jump on the switch inappropriately, or speed inappropriately.
I also understand that then people may not then use them when it gets foggy, as they wish to (dangerously) drive faster in fog - still thinking on a solution for that one ;)

i see where your coming from, personally i find drl's to bright on modern cars and not being able to see them indicate because usally they are near the front indicator, also if were going to limit speeds when a button is pressed its taking common sense away from the driver, enough driving aids doing that already tho, people think its cool to drive with fog lights on but its not,and its these people who will also come out ok after ancident etc, maybe a visability sensor to sense fog and rain conditions so only when it is needed can fog lights be switched on and off, also they should be done so they are automatically switched off when lights are turned off so you actually have to push the switch back on to use them and not drive around with them on once lights are turned on.

Sorry but they are technically called low visability lights and not just FOG lights and should really only be used if visability is less than 100 metres. ::) But I know where you are coming from as it does get my goat when people have them on when there is the slightest of mist,  >:( as does people that park on stupid places but put their hazzard lights on because they think it right to do so >:( >:(

Yes. True. But as you say, you get the gist.

And yes, your other point. Agreed.
