MG TF Gearbox oil
« on: 08 January 2013, 18:56:14 »

Just about to change the gear oil in dtrs MG, which is listed as MTF94, this is an EP75w80 but of a specific type rated for MG and some Rover gearboxes. I note that Opie Oils below offer XSS 10W40 as an MTF94 equivalent. Presumably I could use this and use the excess in the Omegas, as it will work out cheaper to do it this way than buying it in 3 separate litre bottles, £10 odd each at the local Rover garage.

Any thoughts? :y

It also seems strange using what sounds like an engine oil in the gearbox. :-\ :-\ :-\

This must be the only car related issue where no OOFer has a 'helpful' opinion :( :( :(

Sorry, thought it had been answered :-[ :-[ :-[

I'd read that spec sheet as you do in that it is the correct spec. If in doubt, it's worth a quick call/email to Opie to confirm :y

Ah, reread that and clearly there is a fault on the Opie oils site as that engine oil is most certainly not suitable

Thanks Mark, that confirms my suspicion. I've located a stockist of the MTF94 anyway, its just a bit dearer.

Cheers
