engine oil light flickering at idle 2.2dti
« on: 16 January 2013, 09:28:06 »

Hey there,

Its been a while since I've posted as my 2.2 dti has been running very well, however today whilst driving the engine oil light started to flicker on and off, and it remains steadily on when at standstill.

Engine oil levels have been checked and look fine - what could this be?

thanks in advance for your help forum members.

Regular 3000 mile oil changes are important on the diesels. What mileage has it done?

Get the oil changed and re-review.

A few possibles:

Diesel contamination of the oil possibly due to a leaking injector - monitor the oil level carefuly following the change and consider a strong dose of injector cleaner.

Tired engine - if well serviced then should not be a problem as they are known to do 300K + miles

Faulty pressure switch - Check what happens after the oil change

Oil pump pressure relief valve stuck open - Again, monitor after the oil change.

So change the oil for decent stuff and keep and eye on it.

Many thanks for the advice - I'll see what happens after the oil change and then tick off the other areas you have suggested  :y

Can you recommend a good injector cleaner?

where are oil pressure switches located on omegas? fancied getting mine out and doing anoil pressure test.

as for the flickering light obviously follow marks advice but if its not a dodgy pressure switch could it be a lazy oil pump?

Had this on my DTi, it was down to the oil pressure switch. Lamp would flicker or come on solid at idle but go straight out with the minimal of throttle.

Easy to replace, just put the car up on axle stands, drop the undertray, look up the o/s of the block and you'll see the switch with the electrical connector, unclip the plug and you'll need a socket that fits (can't remember the size) as you can't get enough leverage with a spanner.

Easy quick job to do.

hmm weird.   the problem seems to have corrected itself without intervention.  I'll go ahead and change the oil pressure switch anyway.

Can you recommend a good injector cleaner?

My personal preference is Forte Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment:

Same stuff - new packaging

Or Comma Diesel Magic:

Around £6 at Halfords
